What is Worship?

WorshipAccording to Webster’s, the word worship comes from the Old English word weorthscipe (before 12th century) or as we would say today worthship. It is technically a reverence offered a divine being or supernatural power ; also : an act of expressing such reverence.

Considering the root word (worth-ship) and the technical definition you can say that worship is the act of expessing to God his value or worth. When we go to Church we worship. We say to God that his value is of high enough importance that we can take time out of our week to spend in reverence of him. We worship in songs that state his Holiness and Deity. We worship in prayer by expressing our love and thankfulness to him. We worship him in offerings by returning a portion of what he has given us. We worship him through the preaching of his word by allowing him to reign supreme in our lives. Yes we worship when we attend church with the correct attitude. But what about away from church? Do we worship him then?

Do I hold God in a position of reverence when I am outside the building that we have set aside for the express reason of worship? Does my life reflect his worth? In reality this is where I really worship. The way I live my life, the words that come out of my mouth, the works of my hands, the paths of my feet, these are what demonstrate God’s true worth to me. How can I curse my brothers and sisters and say that God is of utmost importance? Didn’t Jesus say that the world would know we are his disciples by our love for one another? If I never read God’s word or consider his ways, are they really important to me? Everything I do demonstrates my value of God. It either states his importance to me or lack thereof. If you would like to read more on this subject, try the book of James. He wrote;

(Jas 2:17) Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
